Technology is a double-edged sword
In Classical Arabic, the word "التِّقَانَةُ" (al-tiqānah) is used.[1] However, in Egypt, and in some other Arab countries, people use the word "تكنولوجيا" (tiklūna) as is. This is because it is characteristic of the Egyptian language to borrow technical words as they are, without any changes.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Europeans began using terms like "Technik" (German) or "technique" (French) to denote "the way something is done." These terms were applied to all applied arts, such as dance, navigation, and printing, regardless of whether tools were required.[5] At that time, "Technologie" (German and French) either referred to the academic discipline that studied "the methods of art and crafts," or the political discipline that "legislated the occupations of the arts and crafts."[5] The distinction between the terms "technique" and "technology" is not present in English, and both are referred to as "technology." The term was rare in English and was often used for academic disciplines, such as at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).[6]
In the 20th century, as a result of scientific advancements and the Second Industrial Revolution, the term "technology" was no longer solely an academic discipline and acquired a new meaning: the application of knowledge to achieve results.[5]

Early humans made stone tools through observation and experimentation. They learned how to make these tools about 2 million years ago by striking stones together to sharpen and shape them as desired, thus creating the stone axe. This method evolved 75,000 years ago, and they began using pneumatic carving (pressure at specific angles and with specific force) to create tools with greater precision.[7]
Charles Darwin described the discovery of fire as "probably the greatest invention of man."[8] Archaeologists say that humans have been using fire "continuously" for at least 1.5 million years.[9] Fire, fueled by wood and charcoal, helped early humans cook their food, making it easier to digest, which allowed them to utilize their food more efficiently and expand their food choices.[10] The cooking hypothesis suggests that learning to cook may have increased brain size in early humans, but many researchers are not convinced by the evidence.[11] Archaeologists have found evidence of hearth use dating back 790,000 years. Researchers are convinced that this likely contributed to the formation of more organized societies, and consequently, to the development of languages within these societies.[12]
Other inventions also emerged during the Paleolithic period, including clothing and housing.[13] Archaeologists still disagree on the exact timing of these inventions, but there is evidence suggesting clothing existed between 90,000 and 120,000 years ago, and housing around 450,000 years ago.[13] As the Paleolithic period progressed, housing evolved. Humans began building wooden huts around 380,000 years ago.[14] Clothing was made from the furs and hides of animals they hunted, which allowed them to migrate to colder climates. People began migrating from the hot regions of Africa to cooler regions of Eurasia (Europe and Asia).
